About Scorpion Gym

The Scorpion Gym was established, by chief coach Chris Hughes, in 1978 to promote the recently introduced sport of kickboxing. At first we were based in a series of make do premises, school gymnasiums, community centres and youth Clubs. We were eventually offered a permanent base in what was then Penhill Youth club. We set about building a fully equipped gym in this location. We remained in this location for 4 or 5 years.

We built a successful squad of fighters with numerous British and international Champions. In 1994 we moved into our current location, 5 Westcott Place, where we remain to this day. In this building we have a fully equipped Gym with all the facilities to develop fighters of the highest calibre. Joint Head Coach's Dan and Chris Hughes have garnered their knowledge from their time participating in a range of sports and Martial arts including Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing, Karate, Jui Jitsu, Kung Fu and Escrima to name a few.

In the 90's and 2000's we produced a string of champions.

Lee Willis British light weight champion.

Jay Douglas British middle weight champion.

Simon Bellety European super welter weight champion.

Austin Caverly British super middle weight champion.

Matt Roberts English middle weight champion.

More recently Daniel Hughes ruled as British cruiser weight Champion for 6 years. in 2016 he challenged for a world title, fighting the world number 1, Amur Abduliah in his own back yard in the USA. Unfortunately Daniel was unsuccessful in this endeavour and is now passing on his experience and knowledge to the stars of the future,

In the last couple of years we have moved away from the conventional version of kickboxing and now train for the exciting format known as K1. This format can be viewed on the British Super Fight Series, Glory and gets extensive coverage on Sky and UFC Fightpass
The gym is currently enjoying success with a new generation of fighters with Sami Salem leading the way. Sami is currently British 60 kg Professional K1 Champion with a Professional record of 5 fights, 5 wins, 4 KO’s.

Although we train fighters, we also welcome people who want to train for fitness and we can offer programmes that cater for the individual. We also run a successful junior section which is based on a structured plan for fitness and fun.
